Experience

Following his PhD, Dr. Ganguli worked at the Alfred Gessow Rotorcraft Center of the University of Maryland as an Assistant Research Scientist from 1994 to 1997 on projects on rotorcraft health monitoring and vibratory load validation for the Naval Surface Warfare Center and United Technology Research Center, respectively. He also worked at the GE Research Lab in Schenectady, New York, and at Pratt and Whitney, East Hartford, Connecticut, from 1997 to 2000.
He joined the Aerospace Engineering department of IISc as an Assistant Professor in July 2000. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2005 and to Full Professor in 2009. He has held visiting positions at TU Braunschweig, University of Ulm and Max Planck Institute of Metal Research, Stuttgart, in Germany; University Paul Sabatier and Institute of Mathematics, in Toulouse, France; Konkuk University in South Korea, the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in USA, and the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.

Research Statement

Prof. Ganguli’s research is broadly focused on aeronautics, applied mechanics and computational science. More specifically, he has addressed problems in structural dynamics and aeroelasticity, structural health monitoring, composite and adaptive structures and optimal design. He has worked on flight vehicles such as helicopters, aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles and micro air vehicles. His research capability and educational training allows him to address aerospace and mechanical structures and systems. Some of his key contributions to the technical literature which have made an impact are discussed below.

Prof. Ganguli has found that there exist rotating beams which share an eigenpair with uniform non-rotating beams, thereby showing apparent exact solutions for rotating beams (Ananth and Ganguli, J. of Applied Mechanics, 2009). He has solved rotating beam problems efficiently using a spectral finite element approach (Vinod et al, Int. J. of Solids and Structures) and devised novel basis functions based on piano and violin strings to accelerate the convergence of rotating beam codes (Gunda and Ganguli, J. of Applied Mechanics, 2007; Vinod and Ganguli, Finite Elements for Analysis and Design, 2011). Recently, he has shown the existence of non-rotating beams which are isospectral to rotating beams, a finding which has important consequences for the testing of structures for obtaining rotating natural frequencies (Sandilya et al, J. of Applied Mechanics, 2012).

Dr. Ganguli has also addressed problems on vibration control in aircraft fins using robust control methods and has shown eigenstructure based approaches for sensor and actuator placement (Rao et al, J. of Intelligent Material Systems and Structures, 2008). He has also shown that evolutionary algorithms are very suitable for minimization of cost functions needed for sensor placement (Dutta et al, Proc. of Royal Society A, 2011). He has studied sloshing effects in fluid filled rectangular tanks (Kishore et al J. of Computational Physics, 2010) and has performed uncertainty quantification for such systems using Monte Carlo simulations and polynomial chaos expansion (Kishore et al, Acta Mechanica, 2011).

Prof. Ganguli has addressed the problems of design of unmanned air vehicles and micro air vehicles using an optimization approach. He used kriging algorithm in conjunction with the powerful non-denominated genetic algorithms to find Pareto optimal fronts for the conceptual design of a UAV (Rajagopal and Ganguli, Aeronautical Journal, 2008). He has used optimization methods to improve the performance of flapping wing lift proposers in air (Mukherjee and Ganguli, J. of Intelligent Materials and Systems, 2010) and water (Karthigan et al, 2012, J. of Intelligent Materials and Systems, 2012). In these flapping wing problems, he has investigated the use of piezoceramic materials and electro active polymers. He has also experimentally and computationally characterized the male blowfly Calliphora wing during his Humboldt fellowship (Ganguli et al, Experimental Mechanics, 2010).

Prof. Ganguli’s PhD research problem involved the use of optimization methods for the composite tailoring and blade geometry design of helicopter rotors (Ganguli and Chopra, AHS Journal, 1998). He showed that composite couplings can be tailored to reduce vibration, increase blade life and enhance aeroelastic stability (Ganguli and Chopra, AIAA Journal, 1996). In recent years, Prof. Ganguli has addressed several important problems in mechanics with particular focus on nonlinearity and uncertainty in modern helicopter rotors made using composite and piezoelectric materials. He has shown that hysteresis nonlinearity caused by piezoelectrically actuated trailing edge flaps can considerably reduce the performance of harmonic optimal controllers used for helicopter vibration control (Viswamurthy and Ganguli, AIAA J. Guidance Control and Dynamics, 2006). He has developed hysteresis compensation methods for the helicopter control problem (Viswamurthy and Ganguli, Sensors and Actuators: A, 2007). He has also shown the feasibility of using piezoceramic shear actuation for the development of an active twist rotor (Thakkar and Ganguli, Smart Materials and Structures, 2006). He has shown that active twist can not only be used to reduce the vibratory hub loads, but also to reduce dynamic stall through flow control around the rotor disk (Thakkar and Ganguli, Sensors and Actuators: A, 2007).

Prof. Ganguli has found that polynomial response surfaces and stochastic optimization methods offer an innovative combination for design of low vibration rotors (Ganguli, J. of Sound and Vibration, 2002). He has discovered the enormous impact of composite material uncertainty on helicopter aeroelastic response, vibratory loads and stability (Murugan et al, J. of Aircraft, 2008). Since the helicopter is a nonlinear system due to Coriolis effects, moderate deflections and nonlinear aerodynamics, the propagation of uncertainty through the governing differential equations leads to disproportionate and surprising effects (Murugan et al, AIAA J, 2008). However, the use of robust optimal design can alleviate the problems caused by uncertainty (Murugan et al, Aeronautical J, 2012).

Prof. Ganguli has performed system identification for a 4-bladed hingeless helicopter using recurrent neural networks (Vijayakumar et al, AHS Journal, 2006). He has shown that model free approach based on radial basis function neural network can be used to calculate aerodynamic derivatives (Kumar et al, J. of Aircraft, 2008). He has developed a direct adaptive neural controller for a helicopter, which is well known as an unstable aerospace system (Vijayakumar et al, Eng. Appl. of Artificial Intelligence, 2009).

Prof. Ganguli pioneered the idea of using mathematical models of dissimilar rotor blades to develop health monitoring systems during his postdoctoral work at the University of Maryland (Ganguli et al, AIAA J, 1998). In recent years, he initiated research on health monitoring of composite helicopter rotors by addressing the problems of matrix cracks, delamination and fiber breakage (Pawar and Ganguli, Composites Science and Technology, 2006). He modeled the damaged rotor blade, studied its aeroelastic behavior in forward flight, and developed approaches for life prediction and prognostics (Pawar and Ganguli, J of Aircraft, 2007). He pioneered the application of soft computing methods such as neural networks and fuzzy logic for solving the pattern recognition problem of health and usage monitoring of helicopters in a highly noisy environment (Ganguli, AIAA J, 2002).

In recent research, he has investigated the effect of material uncertainty on structural health monitoring and studied the use of control gains as damage indicators for smart composite structures (Umesh and Ganguli, Smart Materials and Structures, 2009). He has shown that it is important to find robust damage indicators which show low sensitivity to noise and material uncertainties in the structures (Umesh and Ganguli, Structural Health Monitoring, 2009). This research was funded by the Boeing Company as part of a larger project to study the interaction of material uncertainty, control and damage detection. As a spinoff of this research, he has also shown the importance of uncertainties on the control of smart structures and has highlighted the importance of uncertainty in piezoelectric coefficient on vibration control (Umesh and Ganguli, Mechanics of Advanced Materials and Structures, 2013). Prof. Ganguli has showed the power of soft computing methods, particularly those based on fuzzy logic in detection and isolating damage from uncertain vibration data (Chandrasekhar and Ganguli, Mechanical Systems and Signal Processing, 2009).

Prof. Ganguli has developed a powerful genetic fuzzy system for damage detection from noisy data which is now emerging as a robust approach for solving the difficult inverse problems in health monitoring (Pawar and Ganguli, Computer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering). In such problems, we need to find the damage in the system from noisy measured data from uncertain models. He has written a research monograph on this problem to popularize the method (Structural Health Monitoring using Genetic Fuzzy Systems, Springer, 2011).

Prof. Ganguli has developed a novel method to estimate remaining life of a gas turbine blade from modal data (Kumar and Ganguli, Mechanical Systems and Signal Processing, 2007; US Patent 7555951). During his work in Pratt and Whitney for over two years, he developed algorithms based on Kalman filters and neural networks (Volponi et al, J of Gas Turbine and Power, 2003).  He has helped in solving difficult inverse problems in fault isolation of gas turbines and pioneered the use of fuzzy logic in gas turbine diagnostics in order to address uncertainty (Ganguli, J of Gas Turbine and Power, 2003). He also applied median type filters and myriad filters for removing noise from typical gas path signals (Uday and Ganguli, J of Gas Turbine and Power, 2011). His work on gas turbine diagnostics has been published as a book (Gas Turbine Diagnostics: Fault Isolation and Signal Processing) by CRC press in 2013.

Prof. Ganguli has proposed powerful evolutionary optimization methods for the strength based design of composite box-beams (Kathiravan and Ganguli, Composite Structures, 2007) and has developed approaches for the design of low weight composites using different failure criteria (Sateesh et al, Mechanics of Advanced Materials and Structures, 2012). He has shown that different failure criteria for composite materials can be combined to create conservative as well as low weight designs for composite structures. He has designed damage tolerant composite structures by creating objective functions which lead to dispersion of the ply angles (Gyan et al, J. Reinforced Plastics and Composites, 2012).
